Flora and Fauna Excursions in Ushuaia

The southernmost city in the world has a large number of animal and plant species to contemplate during a stay, even in winter. Thanks to the excursions in Ushuaia you can admire the lenga trees, birds, flowers and sea lions, among others.

The flora of Tierra del Fuego

The place par excellence to know in depth the typical Fuegian forest is undoubtedly the Tierra del Fuego National Park. There, in its 63 thousand hectares, you will be able to observe the autochthonous species of the region, such as:

- Lenga trees: the most common in the area, they have deciduous, lustrous and asymmetrical leaves that can reach up to 30 meters in height and 1.5 meters in diameter.

- Ƒires: the second most abundant population in the Park and in UshuaiaThey have deciduous leaves, toothed and shiny, are shrubby.

- Guindos: third species in quantity, they are also known as "coihues" and have small, evergreen and elongated leaves. They can measure up to 30 meters high and 1.20 meters in diameter.

Another of the "attractions" of the flora that can be seen in the park are the peat bogs, consisting of plant remains (mainly moss), with the ability to retain water and moisture, can be thousands of years old.

In the various marked trails of this beautiful area you can also see shrubs (michay, calafate, mata negra and chaura) and flowers (campanilla biflora, frutilla de magallanes and drosera).

The fauna of Tierra del Fuego

The National Park is also the habitat of many typical species of UshuaiaThe area is home to the red fox, the rabbit and the beaver (with its famous "castoreras", a spectacle apart), as well as several birds such as the peregrine falcon, the barn owl or the chimango.

For those who wish to see marine and Patagonian species, the best tour is the navigation through the Beagle Channel, since it has stops at two very important islands:

- The island of wolves: this is home to sea lions of one or two hairs, marine mammals that can weigh up to 300 kg and measure 3 meters.

- The island of the birds: there inhabit the silver petrel, the imperial cormorant, the cauquƩn, the steamer duck and the gull, among others.

It is also possible to see king penguins and Magellanic penguins, depending on the time of year.

Are you going to miss the opportunity to get to know the local flora and fauna in the walks in Tierra del Fuego National Park  and the Beagle Channel navigations ?
