Can you imagine visiting in summer the southernmost artisanal fishing village in our Argentina, located on the shores of the legendary Beagle Channel and only 70 km from Ushuaia?
A day of adventure awaits you in Puerto Almanza, where you will not only learn the history of this small village whose life revolves around artisanal fishing in the Beagle Channel, but you will also taste a unique lunch, with the freshest products straight from the sea to your table.
We leave the city behind to head towards the northeast of the island, traveling about 70 km along the King Crab Route, a scenic road that will take us to Puerto Almanza. First, we will travel the iconic National Route No. 3 with a key stop at the Carbajal Valley viewpoint.
Also, you will see the location of the Ushuaia winter centers, such as the famous Cerro Castor (the southernmost ski resort in the world) until reaching Rancho Hambre, where we detour to continue our way along Provincial Route J, which enters an autochthonous nothofagus forest, accompanied by the winding Lasifashaj River. Additionally, you will see Laguna Victoria and the famous Flag Tree, a natural symbol of life in the south, shaped by the region's Patagonian winds.
Famous for the incomparable quality of its seafood, you will personally learn what the daily life of the local fishermen of Puerto Almanza is like, as they daily catch king crabs, mussels, and fresh fish that come directly from the Beagle Channel to your table.
The gastronomic experience is the heart and most special moment of this experience. Summer in Ushuaia guarantees the freshest products from the Beagle Channel. In a typical local restaurant, you will enjoy dishes prepared with fresh ingredients straight from the Beagle Channel, and if you choose the premium version of the King Crab Route Tour, you will be able to taste the famous king crab, one of the most coveted and recognized products in Ushuaia and internationally for its exquisite and incomparable flavor.
Before returning to Ushuaia, we will take a brief walk to the Cascada del Duende, one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the area. A final moment to stretch your legs, enjoy the landscape, and close the experience connecting with nature.
1. The adventure starts right at your doorstep
We pick you up directly from your accommodation in Ushuaia para comenzar una jornada distinta, donde el landscape, the cultura and the sabores del Canal Beagle se entrelazan.
2. National Route No. 3: valleys, winter centers, and historical sites
We will travel along the legendary National Route No. 3, one of the most iconic in the country, which crosses the most characteristic valleys and forests of Ushuaia's geography. You will pass through the Carbajal Valley, a glacier-carved valley that surprises with its extensive peat bogs, native forests, and the Fuegian Andes Mountains.
Along the way, we will come across the Ushuaia winter centers, such as Tierra Mayor, Villa Las Cotorras, and the Cerro Castor area, the southernmost ski resort in the world. At Rancho Hambre, a key site in Ushuaia's history as it was the location of the first attempted European settlement on the island, we will detour to continue along Provincial Route J.
3. Route J: scenic road to the Beagle Channel
By detouring along Route J, the surroundings become increasingly wild and authentic. This gravel road crosses autochthonous Nothofagus forests, peat bogs, and mountain landscapes accompanied by the Lasifashaj River. Additionally, you will see Laguna Victoria, a natural corner surrounded by forest.
4. Scenic stop at the iconic Flag Tree
We stop to contemplate the Flag Tree, a natural formation whose extreme lean, a product of southern winds, has become a symbol of this land's character. From here, you will be able to take spectacular photos of the landscape. Further ahead, the landscape opens up and you will begin to see the Beagle Channel, announcing the arrival at Puerto Almanza, where the sea and fishing life take center stage.
5. Arrival at Puerto Almanza: fishing village facing the Beagle Channel
Puerto Almanza is the southernmost artisanal fishing village in the country, where life revolves around the sea. Backed by the forest and facing the imposing Beagle Channel and Navarino Island, where our Chilean neighbors from Puerto Williams are located, a handful of families live in direct contact with the sea, depending day by day on what its waters offer. You will feel the contrast with the city as soon as you arrive: low houses, the smell of the sea, nets drying in the sun, and the calm of the place marked by artisanal fishing.
6. Real stories of artisanal fishing at the End of the World
You will learn about the work of artisanal fishermen who go out daily in small boats to catch king crab, mussels, oysters, and fish. Every dish that reaches the table has a story of effort and tradition behind it. You will see how seafood is transported, processed by hand, and how the sea defines each day. It is a genuine contact with coastal life, which very few travelers get to know.
7. Lunch with the freshest products: straight from the sea to your table
In a typical restaurant in Puerto Almanza you will experience the most awaited moment of the day: lunch with fresh products coming directly from local artisanal fishing. The standard menu includes fish or seafood of the day, prepared with recipes that enhance the natural flavor of the sea.
If you choose the premium version of the excursion, you will be able to taste the famous Fuegian king crab, one of the most famous products of Ushuaia, recognized for its delicate texture and unmistakable flavor. An authentic gastronomic experience, where each dish reflects the identity of the Beagle Channel and the tradition of this small fishing village.
And if you prefer not to eat fish, you also have other traditional à la carte options to enjoy lunch your way.
8. Walk to the Cascada del Duende
After enjoying the exclusive lunch in Puerto Almanza and its coastal surroundings, we will take a brief accessible walk to the Cascada del Duende, one of the natural attractions of the area. The trail is easy and crosses lenga forests and riverside sections, allowing for a direct connection with nature as you approach this waterfall. This walk is ideal for stretching your legs and experiencing an active moment during the excursion before starting the return to Ushuaia.
9. Panoramic return to Ushuaia with the taste of the south
We begin the return to Ushuaia along the same scenic road. We return with another light, a different perspective, and the memory of having visited an authentic place, where the sea, history, and daily life intertwine in an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
