Can you imagine visiting in spring the southernmost artisanal fishing village in Argentina, located on the shores of the legendary Beagle Channel and just 70 km from Ushuaia?
A day of adventure awaits you in Puerto Almanza, where you’ll not only discover the small artisanal fishing village, but also enjoy a lunch featuring the freshest products straight from the sea to your table.
We leave the city behind and head toward the northeast of the island, traveling about 70 km along the King Crab Route. We’ll follow National Route No. 3, with a stop at the Carbajal Valley viewpoint. Along the way, you’ll see the winter centers of Ushuaia, such as the famous Cerro Castor (the southernmost ski resort in the world), and at Rancho Hambre we’ll turn onto Provincial Route J, which winds through the native Nothofagus forest alongside the meandering Lasifashaj River. You’ll also discover Laguna Victoria and the famous Árbol Bandera, shaped by the Patagonian winds of the region.
Famous for the quality of its seafood, in Puerto Almanza you’ll get a close look at the daily life of local fishermen, who catch king crab, mussels, and fresh fish every day.
And since the gastronomic experience is the heart and most special moment of this experience, at a typical local restaurant you’ll enjoy dishes prepared with fresh ingredients straight from the Beagle Channel.
Before returning to Ushuaia, we will take a brief walk to the Cascada del Duende, one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the area. A final moment to stretch your legs, enjoy the landscape, and close the experience connecting with nature.
The King Crab Route excursion in Ushuaia is an exclusive gastronomic experience, specially designed to help you make the most of your visit to the End of the World, offering you a perfect combination of nature, local culture, and traditional Beagle Channel cuisine.
1. The adventure starts right at your doorstep
We’ll pick you up directly from your accommodation in Ushuaia to begin a different kind of day, where the landscape and the flavors of the Beagle Channel come together.
We’ll leave the city and head toward the King Crab Route, first to the north and then to the east of the island, on a scenic journey that will take you to discover one of Tierra del Fuego’s best-kept secrets, Puerto Almanza, located 70 km from Ushuaia.
2. National Route No. 3: valleys, winter centers, and historical sites
We’ll travel along the legendary National Route No. 3, one of the most emblematic roads in the country, crossing the valleys and forests that are most characteristic of Ushuaia’s geography. We’ll pass through the Carbajal Valley, a valley of glacial origin that stands out for its extensive peat bogs, native forests, and the mountain range of the Fuegian Andes.
Along the way, we will come across the Ushuaia winter centers, such as Tierra Mayor, Villa Las Cotorras, and the Cerro Castor area, the southernmost ski resort in the world. At Rancho Hambre, a key site in Ushuaia's history as it was the location of the first attempted European settlement on the island, we will detour to continue along Provincial Route J.
3. Route J: scenic road to the Beagle Channel
As we turn onto Route J, the surroundings become increasingly rugged and authentic. This gravel road crosses native Nothofagus forests, peat bogs, and mountain landscapes alongside the Lasifashaj River. We’ll also make a stop so you can discover Laguna Victoria, a natural spot surrounded by forest.
4. Stop at the iconic Flag Tree
We’ll make another stop to admire the Árbol Bandera, a natural formation whose extreme inclination, shaped by the southern winds, has become a symbol of the character of this land.
5. Arrival at Puerto Almanza: fishing village facing the Beagle Channel
We arrive at Puerto Almanza, the southernmost artisanal fishing village in Argentina, where life revolves around the sea. With the forest behind it and the imposing Beagle Channel and Navarino Island in front, where our Chilean neighbors of Puerto Williams live, a small group of families lives in direct contact with the sea, depending day by day on what its waters provide. You’ll notice the contrast with the city as soon as you arrive: low houses, the smell of the sea, fishing nets drying in the sun, and the calm of the place shaped by artisanal fishing.
6. Real stories of artisanal fishing at the End of the World
You will learn about the work of artisanal fishermen who go out daily in small boats to catch king crab, mussels, oysters, and fish. Every dish that reaches the table has a story of effort and tradition behind it. You will see how seafood is transported, processed by hand, and how the sea defines each day. It is a genuine contact with coastal life, which very few travelers get to know.
7. Lunch with the freshest products: straight from the sea to your table
In a typical restaurant in Puerto Almanza you will experience the most awaited moment of the day: lunch with fresh products coming directly from local artisanal fishing. The standard menu includes fish or seafood of the day, prepared with recipes that enhance the natural flavor of the sea.
If you choose the premium version of the excursion, you will be able to taste the famous Fuegian king crab, one of the most famous products of Ushuaia, recognized for its delicate texture and unmistakable flavor. An authentic gastronomic experience, where each dish reflects the identity of the Beagle Channel and the tradition of this small fishing village.
And if you prefer not to eat fish, you also have other traditional à la carte options to enjoy lunch your way.
8. Walk to the Cascada del Duende
After enjoying the exclusive lunch in Puerto Almanza, we’ll take a short and accessible walk to Cascada del Duende, one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the area. The trail is easy and passes through lenga forest and sections alongside the river, allowing you to enjoy a connection with nature as you approach this waterfall. This walk is ideal for stretching your legs and enjoying an active moment during the excursion before beginning the return journey to Ushuaia.
9. Panoramic return to Ushuaia with the taste of the south
We begin the return to Ushuaia along the same scenic road. We return with another light, a different perspective, and the memory of having visited an authentic place, where the sea, history, and daily life intertwine in an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
