The Conventional Lakes excursion in Ushuaia is ideal if you want to discover the Great Lakes of Tierra del Fuego in a conventional vehicle, visiting the main highlights of the interior of the island of Tierra del Fuego, without any off-road sections.
We’ll pick you up directly from your accommodation in Ushuaia. From there, we head toward National Route No. 3, north of Ushuaia. Our first stop is the great Carbajal Valley, a glacial valley with its characteristic peat bogs, native Nothofagus forests, and the Andes in the background.
We continue along the National Scenic Route No. 3, crossing our mountain landscapes renewed by spring, and pass by Ushuaia’s winter centers, where the famous Cerro Castor stands out, the southernmost ski resort in the world.
We’ll make a technical stop at a winter center, where you’ll be able to get out, walk around, and enjoy the scenery at your own pace. If, as part of the excursion itinerary, you’d like to take the opportunity to have lunch at this unique place, you’ll be able to choose the menu you’d like to enjoy when we return from the lakes, with lunch available as an optional extra that you can add on your own.
We continue on our way and begin ascending the famous Garibaldi Pass, the trans-Andean pass that connects the city of Ushuaia with the other cities of Tierra del Fuego, making it our only land connection. We’ll arrive at one of the most important panoramic points of the route: the Garibaldi Pass Viewpoint, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Lake Escondido, nestled between forests and mountains, with the immense Lake Fagnano in the distance.
We leave the Viewpoint and Garibaldi Pass behind to head to the shores of Lake Fagnano itself, one of the largest and longest lakes in our Argentina. You will have time to walk along the shore, take photos, and enjoy this unique landscape. Depending on the day, a visit to Estancia La Carmen may also be included (the entrance fee to the ranch is paid separately), adding an insight into the local rural history and another angle of Lake Fagnano.
Before starting the return to Ushuaia, we go back to the winter center, where those who wish and have chosen the option can have an additional lunch (the menu is paid directly at the location). Then, we begin the return to the city.

1. Starting the experience right from your doorstep
We’ll pick you up directly from your accommodation in Ushuaia so you don’t have to worry about anything and your adventure begins from that very moment.
We’ll travel along National Route No. 3 toward the north of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The journey itself is already part of the experience: mountain curves, scenic landscapes, and the feeling that you’re about to discover unique places.
2. You will discover the incredible Carbajal Valley
You’ll discover the famous Carbajal Valley, one of the most outstanding panoramic spots in Ushuaia. From here, you’ll take in Patagonian lenga and ñire forests, vast expanses of peat bogs characteristic of Tierra del Fuego, and the imposing mountains of the Andes.
From this point, you can also see the Sierra Alvear, with peaks such as Mount Alvear and Mount Krund, as well as the slopes of Cerro Bonete and, in the distance, part of the Sierra Sorondo, creating one of the most representative views of Ushuaia and National Route No. 3. An ideal place to take photos, breathe fresh air, and connect with the landscape of the End of the World.
3. Technical stop at one of Ushuaia's winter centers
We’ll make a short technical stop at one of Ushuaia’s winter centers along National Route No. 3, where you’ll be able to get out, stretch your legs, and enjoy the surroundings. At this point, those who wish can choose in advance the lunch menu they would like to enjoy when we return from the lakes.
The lunch is optional and is paid directly at the winter center; it is not included in the price of the excursion. After this break, we continue along National Route No. 3, crossing the area of the winter centers on our way to the Garibaldi Pass.
4. You will be amazed at the Garibaldi Pass Viewpoint
We return to National Route No. 3. The landscape reveals its native lenga and ñire forests and the vast peat bogs that characterize the island. Along this stretch, we pass the Cerro Castor area, home to the southernmost ski resort in the world. We begin ascending the road between the mountains through the famous Garibaldi Pass, the only trans-Andean pass in Tierra del Fuego and the route that connects the city of Ushuaia with the rest of the island.
When you arrive at the Garibaldi Pass Viewpoint, you’ll enjoy one of the most famous panoramic views in the region: Lake Escondido, surrounded by forests, and the impressive Lake Fagnano, stretching out into the distance.
5. You will be amazed by the immensity of Lake Fagnano
We leave Garibaldi Pass behind and descend toward the shore of the imposing Lake Fagnano, also called Khami by the Selk’nam (Ona) people, one of the Indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego. It is the largest lake in Tierra del Fuego, shared with our Chilean neighbors, and one of the largest in Argentina.
You’ll be able to get down to the shore, walk, and take photos with the lake stretching out in front of you, surrounded by forest and mountains. This is the moment when you truly appreciate the scale of the place and the feeling of being in one of the most characteristic landscapes of Ushuaia.
6. Technical stop: we have lunch at the winter center (additional option)
On the way back from Lake Fagnano, we return to the winter center for lunch if you chose that option, with the classic all-you-can-eat Fuegian lamb cooked on a spit standing out as one of the most representative gastronomic experiences in Ushuaia. There are also more traditional options such as chicken, milanesas, or homemade pasta.
If you prefer not to have lunch, you’ll be able to use this time to explore the winter center, relax, and enjoy the surroundings before continuing the return to Ushuaia.
7. We return to Ushuaia with great memories
After our time at the winter center and having discovered the famous great lakes of Ushuaia, we begin the return to the city, traveling once again along National Route No. 3 while you look back on everything you experienced throughout the day.
We’ll drop you off in the city center or back at your accommodation, with the feeling of having discovered the Great Lakes of Ushuaia and some of the most representative landscapes of the End of the World.

The main difference lies in how the route is done and the activities included.
Conventional Lakes lets you discover Lake Escondido and Lake Fagnano in conventional vehicles, following the authorized access routes and without any off-road sections.
In contrast, the 4×4 Lakes versions include off-road routes in vehicles specially equipped for this type of terrain and, depending on the option chosen, may also include a visit to the huskies, activities, and lunch.
The Conventional version does not include the off-road circuit, the husky visit, or the activities included in the 4×4 Lakes versions.
The excursion makes a special stop for lunch at a winter center in Ushuaia, but lunch is not included and is paid directly on-site.
You can choose to eat there or bring your own food and enjoy nature (though we recommend not missing the chance to taste the famous all-you-can-eat lamb or delicious homemade pasta).
If most of the group decides not to have lunch there, it's possible to return to the city earlier; otherwise, you can comfortably stay and enjoy the surroundings while the rest of the group eats.
