Our Classic Lakes 4×4 excursion packs the best of the off-road adventure in Ushuaia into just a few hours, heading toward the great lakes of Tierra del Fuego: Lake Escondido and Lake Fagnano.
Aboard our 4×4 vehicles, we’ll travel along National Route No. 3 heading north, with stops at the Carbajal Valley viewpoint and at Siberianos de Fuego, where you’ll meet the famous Siberian husky dogs. Along the way, you’ll discover the location of Ushuaia’s winter centers, such as Cerro Castor, and cross the Andes through Garibaldi Pass, our only trans-Andean pass connecting the city of Ushuaia with the rest of Tierra del Fuego.
From the Garibaldi Pass Viewpoint, you’ll be able to take in one of the most sought-after panoramic views: Lake Escondido surrounded by forest, with the immense Lake Fagnano in the distance.
We leave National Route No. 3 and enter the Bombilla Nature Reserve, where our 4×4 vehicles show their full potential as we experience the adrenaline of the off-road circuit together with our expert drivers, crossing mud tracks, roots, and uneven roads.
The experience ends on the shore of Lake Fagnano, one of the largest lakes in Argentina, where you’ll be able to walk along the shore, take photos, and enjoy a picada (Argentinian cold cuts platter) with drinks (water, soft drink, or wine) while taking in the immensity of Lake Fagnano, before heading back to Ushuaia.
1. The adventure starts right at your doorstep
We’ll pick you up directly from your accommodation in our Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 4×4 vehicles, comfortable and specially equipped for this type of adventure through mountains, forests, and mud. From the very beginning, you’ll feel that a different kind of day is starting, as we travel along National Route No. 3 toward the north of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The journey itself is already part of the experience: mountain curves, scenic landscapes, and the feeling that you’re about to discover unique places.
2. First picture-perfect stop: Carbajal Valley
The first stop is the Carbajal Valley viewpoint, a landscape of glacial origin that is very characteristic of Ushuaia’s geography: its vast peat bogs covering much of the terrain are especially striking, along with its native forests and the Fuegian Andes.
From this point, you can see the Sierra Alvear, with peaks such as Mount Alvear and Mount Krund, as well as the slopes of Cerro Bonete and, in the distance, part of the Sierra Sorondo, creating one of the most representative views of Ushuaia and National Route No. 3.
3. Up close with the Siberian Huskies:
We continue toward Siberianos de Fuego, a winter center and Siberian husky breeding facility, home to more than 130 dogs. You’ll meet the famous stars of winter, who keep the mushing culture in Ushuaia alive (in winter, they take part in the famous dog sled rides).
In addition to sharing a moment full of puppy love, where you’ll be able to pet them and play with them, you’ll also have the chance to take some of the best photos of the day together. Their lively expressions and contagious energy make it impossible not to get emotional.
4. Paso Garibaldi Viewpoint
We leave the huskies behind and continue along National Route No. 3 toward the ascent into the mountains. Along the way, we pass the main winter centers in Ushuaia, such as Tierra Mayor, Villa Las Cotorras, and the Cerro Castor area, the southernmost ski resort in the world.
As we continue, the landscape fills with lenga and ñire forests, peat bogs, and finally the mountains that accompany the ascent until we reach the Garibaldi Pass viewpoint. This is the only trans-Andean pass on the island and one of the most sought-after panoramic spots: from here, you can take in two classic Tierra del Fuego views. On one side, Lake Escondido, surrounded by forests, and in the distance the imposing Lake Fagnano.
5. Off-road circuit in Bombilla Nature Reserve
Back on the road, we’ll descend the mountain range and reach the most exciting part of the day: the off-road section in Bombilla Nature Reserve. In this stretch, our 4×4 vehicles are put to the test: mud tracks, roots, uneven terrain, and irregular paths that seem impossible for any other vehicle. Together with our expert drivers, adrenaline and fun combine with the natural surroundings as we cross forests and hidden trails until we reach the shore of Lake Fagnano.
6. Lake Fagnano Shore with Picada Included
The grand finale of this 4×4 experience takes place on the shore of Lake Fagnano, also known as Khami by the Selk’nam Indigenous people. This immense lake, one of the largest in Argentina, is striking because of its size and, when the wind blows, it often looks like an inland sea.
With the lake in front of you and the mountains in the background, you’ll have free time to walk, take photos, and enjoy a picada (Argentinian cold cuts platter) with drinks (water, soft drink, or wine), wrapping up the 4×4 experience surrounded by the scale of one of the most iconic landscapes in Tierra del Fuego.
7. Return to your accommodation in Ushuaia
