The Canadian beaver is a species introduced in Tierra del Fuego. In the 1940s, without the environmental knowledge we have now, this enormous rodent was introduced to exploit it in the fur industry. When we say huge, we mean huge: they can measure up to 1 meter.
On the way through the Carbajal Valley, we pass by the beaver farm, but there are no beavers because it has been cleaned up. So you will be able to see this habitat up close and understand the problems they generate in the natural environment.

In total, 20 km (round trip trekking) await you. Our starting point will be at 250 m.a.s.l., reaching the Albino Glacier at 980 m.a.s.l..
We will hike 800 meters through forest, glacial valleys, beaver and peat bogs and lots of adventure.
This proposal is classified as high difficulty (very demanding). It requires an acceptable physical condition according to the difficulties mentioned.

The adventure begins at the door of your lodging from where we will pick you up to start the trip.
Before starting the hike, our guide will give us some tips to fully enjoy the trail.
Once the technical talk was over, we entered the trail.
Little by little we leave the noises of the road behind us and let ourselves be enveloped by the sounds of the Fuegian forest, the landscapes of the peat bogs and the mountain peaks that seem to be getting closer and closer.
The path we follow will lead us to two valleys: the Tierra Mayor Valley and the Carbajal Valley.
There you will get to know the lenga forests, mountains and glaciers. This journey is magical because it takes us from one landscape to another, revealing the secrets of the most incredible nature of Tierra del Fuego.
The fauna of the area is also something worth stopping at. If we look up from time to time, we can find birds flying over the area.
We get to know the beaver farms we talk so much about!
The Canadian beaver is a species introduced in Tierra del Fuego. In the 1940s, without the environmental knowledge we have now, this enormous rodent was introduced to exploit it in the fur industry. When we say huge, we mean huge: they can measure up to 1 meter.
On the way through the Carbajal Valley, we pass by the beaver farm, but there are no beavers because it has been cleaned up. So you will be able to see this habitat up close and understand the problems they generate in the natural environment.
We will continue along the Esmeralda River, making our way to unique places. There is something in the landscape that can be seen almost nowhere else in Patagonia: the peat bogs.
In the last glaciation (are you familiar with the Ice Age?) large areas of the earth were occupied by ice caps and the climate cooled globally.
When temperatures rose again, the glaciers retreated and gave way to the lagoons that flood these valleys. These are the famous peatlands: wetlands of glacial origin that are extremely important for the planet's ecology.
These geological processes left in their wake ecosystems that balance the biodiversity of our island and give us incomparable landscapes.
The Esmeralda River accompanies us to our final destination and gives us a foretaste of the color we are all anxious to see.
The environment slowly turns into a high mountain landscape, where rock, snow and ice dominate. Towards the bottom the Laguna Esmeralda becomes a small reference framed by the green of the forest.
After going around the Paredes Naranjas (Orange Walls), a massif of rock of this color, we reach the millenary ice at the foot of the Ojo del Albino Lagoon (980 masl), located at the end of the glacier, from where we can appreciate the majesty of the Fuegian Andes in all its dimension.
The glacier in this area is a flat massif of ice furrowed by crevasses and surrounded by dark, sharp peaks that discharge meltwater into the Ojo del Albino, where considerable ice floes float.
After lunch, we start our return hike. On the way back, we will be able to take the photos that you have left pending. Our driver will be waiting for us at the base to take you to your lodging, so that you can rest after this morning in the Fuegian forest.
