We invite you to experience the Emerald Lagoon Trekking, the most famous hike in Ushuaia and one of the most popular nature experiences at the End of the World. With approximately 9 km in total (round trip), a trek lasting 4 to 5 hours, and a moderate difficulty level, this hike is perfect for connecting with the mountains and enjoying the scenery step by step.
We’ll pick you up from your accommodation in Ushuaia and head north along National Route No. 3, where the landscape changes quickly: valleys, mountains, and forest in the midst of its seasonal transition.
About 19 km from the city, we begin the trek toward Emerald Lagoon. Throughout the experience, you’ll be accompanied by our professional mountain rescue guide, part of our local team in Ushuaia, who sets the appropriate pace and shares information about the surroundings, making the experience safe and enriching.
We’ll cross the Tierra Mayor Valley, passing through peat bogs, streams, and forest sections, alongside beaver dams that are part of the typical landscape of the area. It’s not a technical hike, but it is active enough for every step to add to the sense of achievement.
The reward for your effort comes at the end of the trail: Emerald Lagoon, the most famous lagoon in Ushuaia. Its characteristic green color, created by glacial sediments, contrasts with the mountains, which may still have snow on their peaks. It’s the perfect moment to stop and enjoy one of the most representative landscapes of the End of the World.
We’ll enjoy a box lunch in front of the lagoon, recharging our energy surrounded by this unique landscape of Ushuaia. After the break, we’ll begin the return along the same trail, with the satisfaction of having experienced one of the most sought-after trekking excursions in Ushuaia.
It does not involve any steep elevation changes, making it suitable for people in good physical condition, mountain enthusiasts, and anyone eager to enjoy a hike during the season when Ushuaia is coming back to life.
Technical details of the Emerald Lagoon Trek:
1. Starting the experience right from your doorstep
We’ll pick you up directly from your accommodation to begin a day filled with landscapes and nature. We’ll travel along National Route No. 3 heading north, leaving the city of Ushuaia behind and covering approximately 19 kilometers until we reach the Tierra Mayor Valley, the starting point of the trail to Emerald Lagoon.
2. Hike Through the Forest
We begin walking through an environment dominated by native Nothofagus forests, such as lenga and ñire. The trail continues among trees, roots, and damp ground caused by the thaw, setting the character of this hike from the very beginning. With every step, you’ll immerse yourself in the tranquility of the forest as it comes back to life, enjoying the connection with Ushuaia’s nature that invites you to walk at an unhurried pace and observe every detail of the landscape.
3. Incredible Landscapes of the Tierra Mayor Valley and Carbajal Valley
You’ll get an up-close look at some of the most beautiful glacial valleys in Ushuaia: Tierra Mayor Valley and Carbajal Valley. As we move forward, the landscape changes constantly, revealing panoramas of mountains, open plains, and landforms shaped by ancient glaciers, with snowmelt on the slopes and peaks that still preserve snow. During this journey, we’ll cross the characteristic peat bogs of Tierra del Fuego, an essential part of the area’s natural landscape, made even wetter by the increase in meltwater.
4. You’ll Discover the Secret of the Beaver Dams
During the hike, you’ll discover restored beaver dam areas that are now free of beavers. These areas are part of the Tierra Mayor Valley landscape and help you understand how the introduction of beavers in Tierra del Fuego transformed the natural environment over decades.
Our guide will explain how beavers altered waterways and forests, as well as the restoration and remediation work being carried out to recover the balance of the ecosystem.
5. Following the Course of the Esmeralda River
In the final section of the trail, the Esmeralda River, with its characteristic color, begins to accompany the route, signaling that the lagoon is getting closer. The landscape opens up, and the views offer a glimpse of the scenery waiting for you at the end of the trail. The constant sound of the water adds rhythm to the hike as we continue toward the famous Emerald Lagoon.
6. Lunch in Front of the Famous Emerald Lagoon
Upon reaching Emerald Lagoon, the effort is rewarded. In front of you appears the green-colored body of water, surrounded by mountains that still hold snow on their peaks and forests beginning to recover their green tones, creating a landscape filled with magic and calm. It’s time to stop and enjoy the satisfaction of having reached one of the most famous landscapes in Ushuaia.
We’ll settle in by the shore to enjoy the box lunch, recharge our energy, and rest, with time to take photos and enjoy the surroundings at an unhurried pace. After this well-deserved break, we’ll return to the trail and begin the hike back, completing the full experience of the Emerald Lagoon Trekking.
7. Return Along the Trail to the Starting Point
After enjoying the beauty of Emerald Lagoon, we’ll walk back along the same trail, taking the opportunity to appreciate the landscapes from a different perspective, including the native forest, the peat bogs, and the surrounding glacial valleys. It’s an ideal moment to notice details you may have missed on the way there and say goodbye to this unique natural setting at the End of the World.
8. Comfortable and Relaxed Return to the City
